Slow programs in Windows 7 and Vista

Programs may run slowly if using Computer name in the SQL connection string.

This is due to LLMNR (Link-Local Multicast Name Resolution).

The connection to SQL can take a long time to connect.

From the Start Menu select Run and type

gpedit.msc

Look for

Computer Configuration  then

Administrative Templates then

Network then

DNS Client then

Turn off Multicast Name Resolution

(enable this.  Enabled means do not use Multicast Name Resolution)

This will have a significant impact on the speed of our SQL based programs for users running Windows 7 and Vista.

As an Alternative to turning off the LLMNR you can use the server IP address instead of the name.
